Lower Porthamel Farm, Brecon Beacons, Wales 2009/06/28 21:39 Karma: 2
Wow, what a place. We visited Lower Porthamel in mid may 2009.

It's almost perfect. The best things were:
Site field, location, bathroom, host and most importantly you can have campfires!!

The site field is great. It has a large pond which kids and dogs can swim in. The farm has a great nature trail where you can collect firewood for your fire.

Location. The site is note ideally suited for walkers in that you cannot walk up mountains from the campsite, however you are the bottom of some amazing hills if you are willing to drive very short distances. The site has a river running through it at the bottom of one of the camping fields. It's lovely. Seriously idyllic.

The owner is really great. Very friendly and he comes round to check things are ok. everything is very informal - have fires anywhere, etc etc.

The bathroom and washing up facilities are first class. Frequently cleaned and very hot water. Lovely.

What's not so great? Not much really, it's fantastic. Somethings should be born in mind though. Firstly, if, like us you found the site through Cool Camping, you need to be aware that the site no longer has an organic shop onsite (or any other shop for that matter!). The shop has now moved to Hay (about 12 miles away). Secondly, their website listed in Cool Camping also doesn't work. But they do answer the phone and are very helpful. The location isn't perfect as it's not near any walking, nor any shops etc. The nearest shops are in Talgarth (co-op), fish and chips, takeaways etc.

However, overall, when you are sat outside your tent watching a sunset over the mountains whilst you toast marshmallows over your campfire, you'll love this place. Seriously, this place is incredible.
